Thursday 6 January 2022 – Epiphany of the Lord
From the Gospel according to Matthew (2, 1 – 12)
Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, in the time of King Herod, behold, some Magi came from the east to Jerusalem and said: “Where is he who was born, the King of the Jews? We saw his star rising and we came to adore him. ” Upon hearing this, King Herod was troubled and all Jerusalem with him. Gathering all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them about the place where Christ was to be born. They answered him, “In Bethlehem of Judea, because this is written by the prophet:” And you, Bethlehem, land of Judah, are not really the last of the principal cities of Judah: for from you a chief will come out who will be the shepherd. of my people, Israel ”».
Then Herod, secretly called the Magi, asked them to tell exactly the time when the star appeared and sent them to Bethlehem saying: “Go and find out carefully about the child and, when you have found him, let me know, because ‘I come to adore him ».
Having heard the king, they left. And behold, the star, which they had seen rising, preceded them, until it came and stood over the place where the child was. When they saw the star, they felt a great joy. Entering the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother, they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their caskets and offered him gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. Warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they returned to their country by another route.
