September 13, 2026 – 24th Sunday in Ordinary Time

+ From the Gospel according to Matthew (18:21–35)

At that time, Peter approached Jesus and asked him, “Lord, if my brother commits offenses against me, how many times must I forgive him? Up to seven times?” Jesus answered him, “I do not say to you up to seven times, but up to seventy times seven.
For this reason, the Kingdom of Heaven is like a king who wished to settle accounts with his servants. He had begun to settle accounts when a man was brought before him who owed him ten thousand talents. Since the man was unable to repay the debt, the master ordered that he, his wife, his children, and all his possessions be sold to settle the debt. Then the servant, prostrating himself on the ground, pleaded with him, saying, ‘Have patience with me, and I will repay you everything.’ The master took pity on that servant, let him go, and forgave him the debt.
As soon as he left, that servant found one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred denarii. He seized him by the throat and began to choke him, saying, ‘Pay back what you owe!’ His fellow servant, prostrating himself on the ground, begged him, saying, ‘Have patience with me, and I will repay you.’ But he refused; instead, he went and had him thrown into prison until he should pay the debt.
Seeing what was happening, his fellow servants were deeply distressed and went to report everything that had occurred to their master. Then the master summoned the man and said to him, ‘Wicked servant! I forgave you that entire debt because you pleaded with me. Should you not also have had mercy on your fellow servant, just as I had mercy on you?'” In anger, the master handed him over to the torturers until he had paid back everything he owed.
This is how my heavenly Father will treat you unless you forgive your brother from your heart.”
