August 15, 2025 – ASSUMPTION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY
OUR PARISH AND CATHEDRAL ARE NAMED AFTER THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY OF THE ASSUMPTION
The entire parish community turns to her in prayer at this delicate time of the change in pastoral leadership, and prays both for Don Filippo Sarullo, to whom they are particularly close and grateful for the precious journey they have shared, and for Don Luciano Fricano, with whom they will continue their journey.
+ From the Gospel according to Luke (1:39-56)
In those days Mary arose and went with haste into the hill country, to a town of Judah.
She entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb.
Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit and exclaimed in a loud voice, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb! And why is this granted me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? Behold, when the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the babe in my womb leaped for joy. And blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfillment of what was spoken to her from the Lord.”
Then Mary said,
“My soul magnifies the Lord,
and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,
for he has looked with favor on the lowliness of his servant.
From now on all generations will call me blessed.
For the Almighty has done great things for me,
and holy is his name;
his mercy is from generation to generation
on those who fear him.
He has shown strength with his arm;
he has scattered the proud in the conceit of their hearts;
He has put down the mighty from their thrones,
and exalted the lowly;
he has filled the hungry with good things,
and sent the rich away empty.
He has helped his servant Israel,
in remembrance of his mercy,
as he spoke to our fathers,
to Abraham and to his descendants forever.”
Mary remained with her about three months, then returned to her home.
