Sunday 5 November 2023 – XXXI of Ordinary Time
+ From the Gospel according to Matthew (23, 1 – 12)
At that time, Jesus turned to the crowd and his disciples saying:
«The scribes and Pharisees sat on Moses’ chair. Practice and observe everything they tell you, but do not act according to their works, because they say and do not do. In fact, they tie heavy and difficult to carry burdens and place them on people’s shoulders, but they don’t want to move them even with a finger.
They do all their works to be admired by people: they widen their phylacteries and lengthen their fringes; they are pleased with the places of honor at banquets, the first seats in the synagogues, the greetings in the squares, as well as being called “rabbi” by the people.
But do not let yourselves be called “rabbi”, because only one is your Master and you are all brothers. And do not call any of you on earth “father”, because only one is your Father, the heavenly one. And do not be called “guides”, because only one is your Guide, the Christ.
Whoever is greatest among you, he will be your servant; but whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.”
