+ From the Gospel according to Matthew (4, 1 – 11)
At that time, Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert to be tempted by the devil. After fasting for forty days and forty nights, he finally got hungry. The tempter approached him and he said to him: “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread”. But he replied: “It is written: ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God'”.
Then the devil took him to the holy city, placed him on the highest point of the temple and said to him: «If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down; for it is written: ‘He will command his angels concerning you, and they will carry you on their hands so that your foot does not stumble against a stone'”. Jesus answered him: “It is also written: ‘You shall not test the Lord your God'”.
Again the devil took him up a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory and said to him: “All these things I will give you if, falling down at my feet, you will worship me”. Then Jesus answered him: «Go away, Satan! For it is written: ‘The Lord your God shall you worship: him alone shall you serve'”.
Then the devil left him, and behold, angels came and ministered to him.
Word of the Lord.
