+ A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Matthew (22:15-21)
At that time, the Pharisees went off and plotted how they might entrap Jesus in his speech.
They sent their disciples to him, along with the Herodians, to say, “Teacher, we know that you are a man of integrity and that you teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. You are not swayed by others, because you show no partiality. Tell us, then, what is your opinion: is it lawful to pay the census tax to Caesar or not?”
But Jesus, knowing their malice, replied, “You hypocrites, why are you testing me? Show me the coin used for the tax.” They handed him a denarius. He asked them, “Whose image is this, and whose inscription?” They answered, “Caesar’s.”
Then he said to them, “Repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar, and to God what belongs to God.”
