+ From the Gospel according to Matthew (21:33-43)

At that time, Jesus said to the chief priests and the elders of the people:
“Hear another parable: there was a man who owned a piece of land and planted a vineyard on it. He surrounded it with a hedge, dug a winepress in it, and built a tower. He leased it to some tenants and went away on a journey.
When the time came to gather the fruit, he sent his servants to the tenants to collect the harvest. But the tenants seized the servants; they beat one, killed another, and stoned a third. He sent other servants again, more numerous than the first, but they treated them in the same way.
Finally, he sent his own son to them, saying, ‘They will respect my son!’ But the tenants, seeing the son, said among themselves, ‘This is the heir. Come, let us kill him and we shall have his inheritance!’ They seized him, threw him out of the vineyard, and killed him.
When, therefore, the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those tenants?”
They answered him, “He will bring those wretches to a miserable end and lease the vineyard to other tenants who will deliver the produce to him at the proper time.”
And Jesus said to them, “Have you never read in the Scriptures:
‘The stone that the builders rejected
has become the cornerstone;
this was done by the Lord
and is a marvel in our eyes’?
Therefore I tell you: the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people that produces its fruit.” The Word of the Lord.
