August 9, 2026 – 19th Sunday in Ordinary Time

+ From the Gospel according to Matthew (14:22-33)

[After the crowd had fed], Jesus immediately made the disciples get into the boat and go ahead of him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds. After dismissing the crowds, he went up on the mountain by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone.
Meanwhile, the boat was already a long way from land, tossed by the waves, for the wind was against it. In the fourth watch of the night, he came toward them, walking on the sea. When the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were terrified, saying, “It’s a ghost!” and cried out in fear. But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, “Take courage! It is I; do not be afraid!”
Then Peter answered him, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.” And he said, “Come!” Peter got out of the boat and began to walk on the water toward Jesus. But when he saw how strong the wind was, he became afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried out, “Lord, save me!” Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him, saying, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?”

As soon as they got into the boat, the wind died down. Those in the boat worshiped him, saying, “Truly, you are the Son of God!”
