“Rosalia, Protectora et Patrona”: inauguration of the exhibition in the Cathedral of Palermo on Saturday 25 May 2024
On the occasion of the fourth centenary of the discovery of the relics of Santa Rosalia, the historical-artistic section of the Diocesan Committee appointed by the Archbishop of Palermo H.E. Mons. Corrado Lorefice created the exhibition ROSALIA PROTECTORA ET PATRONA.
The inauguration will take place on Saturday 25 May 2024 at 10.00 in the Cathedral of Palermo in the presence of the Archbishop.
The exhibition, set up in the premises of the Cathedral Treasury, includes more than 130 works including paintings, sculptures, jewels, silver, corals, fabrics, waxes and engravings, precious artefacts which offer a focus on the image of Santuzza of prevalent Sicilian devotion , between the mid-17th and 20th centuries. Among the works on display there is also a surprise that will be revealed on the occasion of the inauguration. This is a review of largely unpublished works from public institutions and private collections from various centers on the island and the peninsula, signs of the great devotion paid to the Patron Saint, artefacts that represent the variety and richness of Sicilian Decorative Arts.
The exhibition is curated by the historical-artistic section of the Diocesan Committee for the fourth centenary of the discovery of the relics of Santa Rosalia: Mons. Filippo Sarullo (Coordinator of the Committee), Prof. Maria Concetta Di Natale (Coordinator of the historical-artistic section), the professors Sergio Intorre, Pierfrancesco Palazzotto, Giovanni Travagliato and Maurizio Vitella of the University of Palermo. The exhibition itinerary connects to the permanent exhibition of the Diocesan Museum, where an entire room is dedicated to Santuzza. The exhibition setup was coordinated by the architect. Barbara Rappa, the scientific secretariat by Dr. Roberta Martorana and the technical secretariat by Emilio Mulinelli.
