Sunday 19 February 2023 – VII of Ordinary Time

+ From the Gospel according to Matthew (5, 38 – 48)

At that time, Jesus said to his disciples:
“You have understood that it was said: ‘An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth’. But I tell you, do not oppose the wicked one; indeed, if someone slaps you on the right cheek, turn the other also to him, and if anyone wants to take you to court and take your tunic, give your cloak as well. And if anyone forces you to go with him one mile, go with him two. Give to those who ask you, and to those who want a loan from you, don’t turn your back.
You have heard that it was said: “You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.” But I say to you: love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be children of your Father who is in heaven; he makes his sun rise on the wicked and the good, and makes it rain on the just and the unjust. Indeed, if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Don’t the tax collectors do the same? And if you greet only your brothers, what are you doing extraordinary? Don’t the pagans do the same? You, therefore, be perfect as your heavenly Father is perfect.”

Word of the Lord.
