Sunday 22nd August 2021 – 21st Sunday in Ordinary Time
From the Gospel according to John (6, 60-69)
“Who will we go to? You have the words of eternal life.”
At that time, many of Jesus’ disciples, after listening, said: “This word is hard! Who can listen to it? ».
Jesus, knowing within himself that his disciples were murmuring about this, said to them: «Does this offend you? What if you saw the Son of man ascend to where he was before? It is the Spirit who gives life, the flesh is of no use; the words that I have spoken to you are spirit and are life. But among you there are some who do not believe ».
In fact, Jesus knew from the beginning who were those who did not believe and who was the one who would betray him. And he said: “This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless it is granted to him by the Father.”
From that moment many of his disciples went back and no longer went with him.
Then Jesus said to the Twelve: “Do you want to go away too?” Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom shall we go?” You have the words of eternal life and we have believed and known that you are the Holy One of God ».
